Nitrox Diving Speciality

Nitrox Diving at Alba

Of all the speciality qualifications that you can gain as a diver, nitrox diving is probably the most useful. Nitrox is a gas mixture containing higher percentages of oxygen. For recreational diving the limit is 40% (beyond this is technical diving). By increasing oxygen in the diving gas, the amount of nitrogen is reduced. This allows you to either reduce your risk of DCS, or, as it most common, increase your No Decompression Limit (NDL), so you have slightly longer bottom times compared with diving on air. The nitrox course covers the benefits and limitations of oxygen, and goes through the requirements for safely using higher mixtures of oxygen.

The nitrox speciality is very similar with all diving agencies, they all involve some theory, learning how to analyse and label your diving gas, and understanding the benefits and limitations of using nitrox to get the most out of your dives. The diving element of the course is optional.
