Fun Diving at Alba

As fun diving destinations go, we consider ourselves very lucky here in north east Bali. The marine life just off the beach is as diverse as it is numerous.

Tulamben is world famous for macro diving, with photographers the world over coming to take shots of various shrimps and exotic nudibranchs. But there’s more to diving here than just tiny marine creatures. We have the bumphead parrotfish, trumpet fish, turtles, cuttlefish, octopus, scorpionfish, garden eels, and a variety of healthy corals.

We also get bigger marine animals, such as mola mola, black/white tip reef sharks, and the occasional manta rays. Our technical divers occasionally report seeing thresher sharks, hammerheads, and even oceanic whitetips (at around 60-70m).

Or approach to fun diving

As with most things at Alba, we do things a little differently than other dive resorts. We don’t have set dive times, you can dive when you want to dive. Our dive guides are always on hand to take you to whichever dive site you wish, and they know them all inside out.

Before going for a fun dive, it’s important that your diving skills are fresh. If not, we offer half-day refresher courses. Scroll to the bottom of the page for more information.

When you’re ready to go diving, you can set your equipment up and analyse your tank if using nitrox. Once you have ensured that you have everything- fin, mask etc, our staff will load it onto the dive van and take you to the dive site. Local porters will unload your equipment, and your guide will give you a dive briefing before getting into the water. After the dive, the porters will load your gear onto the van, and you can head back to Alba. There, our staff will unload your gear for you, and you can then wash your equipment and get ready for the next dive.

Local Dive sites

All local dive sites are shore dives no more than a 10 minute drive away. Most are a 2 minute drive, such as the Liberty wreck or drop-off. You can choose to stay at the dive site if you want to do a second dive there, or you can come back to Alba to relax before choosing where you want to dive next.

We also have a speedboat and a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) that are available for charter for the day. They allows quick access to all dive sites and offer a great day out as a base to dive from. We also use the boat to explore potential dive sites along the coast a little further north of Alba. Get in touch for our daily rates for chartering the boat.

Day trips to Nusa Penida

For groups, we can arrange day trips to Nusa Penida to dive manta point, manta bay and crystal bay. These are the places that you can regularly see manta rays, and, depending on the time of year see mola mola. We arrange transport to Padang Bai, as well as a boat and local dive guide. Our own dive guides will also accompany you. The trip includes two dives. Contact us for more information on day trips.

Refresher courses

It’s very common that people learn to dive on holiday, but then perhaps don’t dive again for one or two years. Like anything else, if you don’t practice something you forget it. The less experience you have, the quicker you will forget.

To get you re-familiar with diving skills and procedures, we offer half-day refresher courses. These involve a divemaster going through the equipment with you, and getting in the pool to allow you to practice diving, and run through some of the skills you learned in your open water course. If you haven’t dived for more than 12 months then you will have to do the refresher before we will take you diving. If you haven’t dived in 10 years, you will need to do the open water course again. Contact us for more information on refresher courses.
