Extended Range Diving Courses at Alba

Extended range diving involves decompression diving in the 45-55m depth range. To safely undertake diving at this level more than one decompression gas can be used, and more complex dive planning and gas management is required.

With Raid, the depth limit is 50m, with TDI it is 55m, and with IANTD it is 51m. Extended range diving is good preparation for trimix diving to 60m and deeper.

Extended range diving constitutes the limit of using air as the main breathing gas. Air is commonly the bottom gas of choice for this kind of diving because trimix is expensive, and prior to trimix being readily available, air was the only alternative. However, the level of narcosis caused by breathing air at 50 or 55m is debilitating in the sense that your reaction times, ability to think clearly, and judgement are all impaired. Gas density is also beyond recommended limits. Gaining experience of this level of narcosis under the supervision of an instructor is essential.

To counter the debilitating effects of narcosis and also reduce gas density, the Raid Deco 50 course includes the use of trimix.

Raid Deco 50

This is an accelerated decompression course, allowing you to dive to 50m using either air or trimix (highly recommended), and undertake up to 30 minutes of decompression using a single decompression cylinder of up to 100% oxygen to accelerate your decompression. This is a very comprehensive course that is equivalent to TDIs intro to tech, advanced nitrox, and decompression procedures combined.

Note that the course usually takes 8 days to complete, and includes more dives than you would undertake at other dive centres for the equivalent level of training. This is intentional to allow a smoother progression and ensure that you have done more than just the bare minimum required to fulfil agency standards. Having the time to increase your understanding and competence is crucial to becoming a safe and skilled technical diver.
